Notch Cancels Minecraft Negotiations With Oculus

Markus Persson, commonly known as Notch, creator of the widely successful game Minecraft, has just announced that talks to bring Minecraft to Oculus have been cancelled.

Markus Persson

After the recent news that Oculus VR was purchased by Facebook for $2 billion, Notch went on Twitter to announce that he ended a potential deal to bring Minecraft to the Oculus Rift with the following statement...
"We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."

Along with his tweet, he also responded full in his blog.
"It’s amazing. You strap on some gear, and then you’re inside whatever world you want. It showed up in books, it showed up in movies, and everyone dreamed about it. Problem was, it kinda sucked. I tried Dactyl Nightmare at an amusement park, and it kinda sucked. Huge wires, unconvincing tracking, horrible visual fidelity. VR kept sucking for a long time, and people kinda gave up on it.
But then something happened. Or, well, it had already happened, but nobody realized. The technology was finally here to do proper virtual reality. The team behind Oculus Rift realized this, and built the first prototype of VR that was finally just good enough to be usable, and it was only going to get better and better. They set up a kickstarter to fund their enthusiasm, and a lot of people got excited. They made about ten times the money they asked for, and I was one of the top-level backers.
I got my oculus rift dev kit, and played around with it. It was convincing. It presented a lot of design problems. It made me nauseous. It was signed by the entire Oculus Rift team. I got super excited and worked on a couple of prototypes before moving on to other things. Perhaps I would pick it up again closer to the consumer version release.
A couple of weeks ago, they reminded me that I still hadn’t visited their office, one of the rewards from the kickstarter. John Carmack would be there. The combined opportunity of seeing their latest tech and getting to talk about vr (and doom) with John was overwhelming, so I took the 12+ hour flight there. What I saw was every bit as impressive as you could imagine. They had fixed all the major issues, and all that remained was huge design and software implementation challenges.
As someone who always felt like they were born five or ten years too late, I felt like we were on the cusp of a new paradigm that I might be able to play around with. I could be part of the early efforts to work out best practices, and while I have no doubt that in ten years we’ll look back at the problems with early VR applications in the same we look back at GUI problems with early PC games, it still felt exciting to me. My head started spinning with potential applications and how to deal with all the issues (how do you do gui? how do you deal with locomotion? what input do you use? what happens if the player leans far enough forward to clip into a wall? how do you prevent vr induced existential crisis?)
Of course, they wanted Minecraft. I said that it doesn’t really fit the platform, since it’s very motion based, runs on java (that has a hard time delivering rock solid 90 fps, especially since the players build their own potentially hugely complex levels), and relies a lot on GUI. But perhaps it would be cool to do a slimmed down version of Minecraft for the Oculus. Something free, similar to the Minecraft PI Edition, perhaps? So I suggested that, and our people started talking to their people to see if something could be done.
And then, not two weeks later, Facebook buys them.
Facebook is not a company of grass-roots tech enthusiasts. Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.
Don’t get me wrong, VR is not bad for social. In fact, I think social could become one of the biggest applications of VR. Being able to sit in a virtual living room and see your friend’s avatar? Business meetings? Virtual cinemas where you feel like you’re actually watching the movie with your friend who is seven time zones away?
But I don’t want to work with social, I want to work with games.
Fortunately, the rise of Oculus coincided with competitors emerging. None of them are perfect, but competition is a very good thing. If this means there will be more competition, and VR keeps getting better, I am going to be a very happy boy. I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven’t historically been a stable platform. There’s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.
And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.
I have the greatest respect for the talented engineers and developers at Oculus. It’s been a long time since I met a more dedicated and talented group of people. I understand this is purely a business deal, and I’d like to congratulate both Facebook and the Oculus owners. But this is where we part ways.
If you want to experience Minecraft in VR, there’s an excellent mod that does this. It’s called Minecrift, and you can find it here.

Ultimately, it seems that Notch does wish them the best, but still feels that he would not rather be a part of this. While he may have his reasons, this definitely comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that the news over Oculus's acquisition was a major news story with varying reactions -- Notch's reaction being more towards the negative.

So far, this is the only impact that the recent purchase has had on the world of gaming. How much more will be affected is uncertain, as only time will tell.

Oculus VR Purchased by Facebook for $2 billion

Recently it was announced that Facebook has bought and acquired Oculus VR. A company focused of virtual reality gaming. with thier most notable piece of tech being the Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset for  3D gaming.

It has been revealed that Facebook purchased Oculus VR for $2 billion.

Here is what Oculus founder Palmer Lucky and his team had to say
"We started Oculus with a vision of delivering incredible, affordable, and ubiquitous consumer virtual reality to the world. We’ve come a long way in the last 18 months: from foam core prototypes built in a garage to an incredible community of active and talented developers with more than 75,000 development kits ordered. In the process, we’ve defined what consumer virtual reality needs to be and what it’s going to require to deliver it.
A few months ago, Mark, Chris, and Cory from the Facebook team came down to visit our office, see the latest demos, and discuss how we could work together to bring our vision to millions of people. As we talked more, we discovered the two teams shared an even deeper vision of creating a new platform for interaction that allows billions of people to connect in a way never before possible.
Today, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve joined forces with Facebook to create the best virtual reality platform in the world.
At first glance, it might not seem obvious why Oculus is partnering with Facebook, a company focused on connecting people, investing in internet access for the world and pushing an open computing platform. But when you consider it more carefully, we’re culturally aligned with a focus on innovating and hiring the best and brightest; we believe communication drives new platforms; we want to contribute to a more open, connected world; and we both see virtual reality as the next step
Most important, Facebook understands the potential for VR. Mark and his team share our vision for virtual reality’s potential to transform the way we learn, share, play, and communicate. Facebook is a company that believes that anything is possible with the right group of people, and we couldn’t agree more.
This partnership is one of the most important moments for virtual reality: it gives us the best shot at truly changing the world. It opens doors to new opportunities and partnerships, reduces risk on the manufacturing and work capital side, allows us to publish more made-for-VR content, and lets us focus on what we do best: solving hard engineering challenges and delivering the future of VR.
Over the next 10 years, virtual reality will become ubiquitous, affordable, and transformative, and it begins with a truly next-generation gaming experience. This partnership ensures that the Oculus platform is coming, and that it’s going to change gaming forever."
We’ll see you in the Metaverse!

Along with a statement from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

"I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire Oculus VR, the leader in virtual reality technology.
Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences.
This is where Oculus comes in. They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away. The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you're actually present in another place with other people. People who try it say it's different from anything they've ever experienced in their lives.
Oculus's mission is to enable you to experience the impossible. Their technology opens up the possibility of completely new kinds of experiences.
Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.
But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.
This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.
These are just some of the potential uses. By working with developers and partners across the industry, together we can build many more. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people.
Virtual reality was once the dream of science fiction. But the internet was also once a dream, and so were computers and smartphones. The future is coming and we have a chance to build it together. I can't wait to start working with the whole team at Oculus to bring this future to the world, and to unlock new worlds for all of us."

This news comes as a shock to many people. How much of an impact this will have on Oculus will need to be seen to determine whether this is truly the next step or a horrible disaster to both Face book & Oculus. However for now, this news will have an impact.

Additional Content Added To Watch Dogs During The Delay

Watch Dogs
, the next game by Ubisoft Montreal is said to have new content added during the development delay.

Originally set to be released November of 2013, it was pushed back due to unforeseen circumstances. The delay, though has allowed them to add more content to the game

Ubisoft has now stated to most major sites and sources

"The entire development team has been working hard to polish and fine tune Watch Dogs, in order to deliver a truly memorable open world game. In parallel, the extra time also allowed the team to include a bit of additional content."

Most reports point to the fact that more sexual content and depictions of such was added to the game. This new content, though did come at somewhat of price. Due to the changes, the game's rating in Australia had to be raised

"As per Australian classification guidelines, Ubisoft resubmitted the updated version with the added content to the Australian Classification Board (ACB). The decision to amend the rating of the game from MA15+ to R18+ was made by the ACB."

Though not the reason for the game's delay, how much this additional content will affect to game is still to be seen

The game itself is still set to be released on May 27 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, & PC.

The Last Of Us - 6 Million Copies Sold

The Last Of Us (2013) has been a massive success for Naughty Dog and Sony. This PlayStation 3 game, with its adult post-apocalyptic theme and story, has been popular with both gamers and critics.

Wining hundreds of awards, from its graphical achievements, to voice over casting, or to its excellent writing. It has won an impressive amount of awards, many which include   "Game of The Year"

They now have another accomplishment to add to their list. The Last Of Us has now sold 6 million copies.

An impressive feat that can be considered a rare occurrence. Especially considering it is a new IP and not a sequel.

Selling more than their previous PlayStation 3 titles
-Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (2007) - 2.6 million copies
          -Uncharted 2:  Among Thieves (2009) - 3.8 million copies
          -Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011) - 3.8 million copies
The Last Of Us surpasses them by a long-shot and will most likely continue to rise.

This announcement also comes at a moment after it was just in the news. With the recent announcement that The Last Of Us will be made into a feature length movie. Along with their recently released DLC that is also climbing the ranks, and becoming just as popular.

The Last Of Us continues to be a very successful game for Naughty Dog and Sony.

The Purpose of RESET

RESET

The "RESET" news is meant to be a news blog. Which the purpose is simple. To inform people of everyday entertainment news.  In which it will cover GAMING, CINEMA, and TELEVISION news. It will cover the stories both big and small. In order to celebrate everything that includes the culture of media.

I am starting this because of my love for media. I get caught up in games, movies, and shows, always analyzing them and  looking forward to the next form of adventure. Realizing that others may share my interest, but may not focus on the many news stories that emerge because of the complex and many ways to get this info. I am creating this to create that source. A simple source. But to still celebrate my favorite form of entertainment media.

Although this is a simple start, I hope for it to evolve. Any comments, suggestions, or stories you wish see, please feel free to let me know.

Thank you for taking your time for reading this and any future stories you take time to read.
