The Walking Dead Season 4 Poster |
With nearly a week since The Walking Dead season 4 finale. I thought I would take this time to look, recap, and review what has happened.
I shall start this out by saying that I enjoy the show. Though I will admit that it has had is share of story arcs that I did not enjoy, ahem, Season 2. I have also read the comics, which I enjoy. I will also admit that the good episodes far outweigh the bad ones, which allows me to continue watching the show. Though the season 3 finale had me disappointed.
Starting off the season we see the prison, full of vegetation along with reasonable living spaces. Throughout the episodes a sickness falls upon the group. This story arc I did enjoy. It allowed for a different form of conflict that pushed the group. to find alternate way of surviving. Also by showing the hidden sides of characters, specifically Carol. I really did enjoy this arc.
Continuing on to the two Governor centered episodes, they were by far my least favorite. While it did show off what he has been up to,and allowed us to see his motivations and actions. This could easily be done inn one single episode instead of dragging it into two. I felt that no overall developments were made.
Episode 8 "Too Far Gone" was worth going through the Governor centered episodes. The emotional impact of the loss of Hershel and the prison was handled very well. Filled with sorrow and action that left the show on a high note before its midseason hiatus.
Ultimately, while I did enjoy it, I felt that the first half of season 4 was leading up to a conclusion we should have gotten at the end of season 3.
The second half of season 4 was interesting. With the group separated, it showed how the sudden change in circumstances changed them. The development of the characters was some of the best in the history off the show. With new developments such as Tara and Abraham's group, along with Terminus and it's group.
Comic spoilers:
The introduction of Abraham may only complicate things. This is do to the fact that Rick needs a right hand man, and that position is filled by Daryl. However, I feel that Tyresse has not been utilized as much as he may deserve. And with Abraham introduced, how can they fully flesh out his character as much as the comic. This being one of my only gripes of the second half of the season. Though I am excited to see The Hunters, and hopeful of the next step.
The season finale though was one of the most intense episodes yet. Showing a completely different Rick who is willing to do anything, especially for his son. The cliffhanger was also a great place to leave off, allowing the next season to be more action packed than ever before.
Ultimately I enjoyed the season. It had some of the best emotional episodes compared to past seasons along with intense action that left me wanting more. This leads me to be very optimistic about the future of the series.
Season 5 has already been approved and Scott Gimple has said that they are well underway writing the next season. Yet, while no official date has been set, The Walking Dead is most likely to arrive October 2014.
